Hi Sarge, Went aboard the USS Princeton LPH-5 Aug '67 'went into the drydock at Long Beach Naval Shipyard a week or two later.. saw the same thing!!! AND STINK!! When all the barnacheiles die they stink!! SHELLBACK 'Cruise of '68!!! If we go across again,I'll probably be Neptune?? Any other old fart sandcrabs out there that take my challenge??? We crossed outa Singapore in late Sept '68. Went across again in May of 69 outa' Hawaii on our way down on the Princeton to pick up "APOLLO TEN!!!!!" and then again in May of 70 on the USS OKINAWA in route to New Zealand on our way to Vet Nam . crossed then somewhere around Pago Pago the commode-door changed our course and put us in the middle of "Typhoon Tessie!!!" well Blow me down and pick me up she was the Captain's Wife!! and almost killed us all!!! that's my story, wanna' know more, meet me at the BAR!! skybill-out
Yup Sarge, 5 days we were in the storm,(MAY 1970) waves broke over the flight deck (look up USS Okinawa LPH-3) all the radio, radar and all commo antannae were knocked out of commission! Overcast prevented shooting a fix on the sun....after 5 days we got slung out to the outer edge of the storm. I along with 3/4 of the crew were sesick...I was pukin' mucus!! Lost 15 pounds in 5 days!!! (Went from 175 to 160 lb.) Finally two of the ships helo pilots crawled up the flight deck into the ship's helo and raised New Zealand on an emgy. freq. and they sent a P-2 out lookin for us and directed us towards NZ!! Patched the ship up in Auckland then hobbled to Subic for a week of repairs and had to go to Sasebo, Japan to finish off the repairs to make the ship "War Ready!!!!!" At the cost of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to the US TAXPAYER!!! BTW the Commode-door did NOT make Admiral, he got asked to take an "Early Retirement!!! PR-2 DELI aka skybill
