1948 Tucker 48
The Tucker Torpedo is one of my favorite automobiles
of all time. Unquestionably the most advanced,
innovative, and forward thinking car available in
America in 1948. The wikipedia article covers the
history of the car, the man, and the brand better than
I could so I’ll link to that here.
Tucker had promised 150hp from a 6.9L, water-
cooled, rear mounted flat six. Tucker did the 911
before Porsche did. The flat six was supposed to
have hemispherical heads and fuel injection as well
as oil pressure operated overhead cams. There were
teething problems with the motor (the technology
simply wasn’t good enough at the time to make the
engine feasible) so opted for an air cooled flat six
that was used in the Bell 47 helicopter. So Tucker
REALLY did the 911 before Porsche did !
