No sir that is an incorrect caption. A 12Lb. shell is at minimum six inches in Diameter moving at 1400FPS. That wound was caused by a one inch steel or iron ball from a canister shot. When that man was hit the shot was only moving at 200-600 FPS and most likely "skipping" across the ground. Any thing bigger or faster would have blown his head into small fragments. The frags from the 12Lb shell were all irregular "shell splinters" as the "shell" was fused to explode in a set time (hopefully in midair) . That is a classic canister shot wound. FYI "Canister shot" is a can filled with one inch iron(mostly) balls turning your muzzle loading cannon into a giant shot gun. At 350 yards or less it would kill or maim 30-40 men per shot, but the "balls" would remain deadly out to 3/4 of a mile, skipping across the ground and killing or maiming men and horses at random.---Ray
