Raw power. As the engines get more efficient and powerful and the airframes lighter and stronger the planes get more fragile.
Yes, Tex Johnson did roll a B-707 back in the day and it was quite a feat. But the difference wasn't in the strength of the plane. It the 1950's many pilots were Vets of WW-II & Korea. They were not afraid of dying or, more importantly, afraid of being fired or sued. Being fired with a "hot-jock" reputation opened many doors.
Today's "pussy" generation of aviators would never jeopardize their careers because now days if they fart too much in the left seat they could have their commercial license yanked forever.
