During the Pacific Island Hopping campaigns, after Tarawa, the common practice was to take the lightly defended smaller islands on either side of the main objective and put gun batteries on them.
During the invasion of Kwajalein (January 31st to February 3rd, 1944) the southeastern tip of Carlson Island (west of Kwajalein) ended up looking like that.
In the same atoll as Kwaj, the naval air base at Roi-Namur was treated the same. The little islands to the south and west looked more like brass catchers than islands after the invasion of Roi-Namur.
Our ancestors had brass balls.
