Pictured here are two members of the US Army's 522nd Field Artillery Battalion. The ground crew is making the best of their Easter by painting personal greetings to Adolf Hitler... on 105MM Howitzer shells. This photo was taken either in Southern Germany or South Eastern France, 1945 !
The 105 was a cased round - a big bullet, so to speak.
The 155mm, 175mm and 203mm used bagged propellant powder charges and a separate round. Some range and height of trajectory could be altered by number or power of the bagged charges.

Looking through black artillery units, The 333rd and 969th Field Artillery Groups were equipped with the 155mm, while the 771st Field Artillery Battalion was equipped with the 4.5inch howitzer (British-based gun mounted on a 155mm carriage). The 4.5" round weighed about 60lbs. The 155mm round weighed about 90-100lbs, depending.
So, judging by the lackadaisical way the standing one is holding the round (and looking at the width of my own hand) I'd say that the photo is from the 771st firing the 4.5".
If I am wrong and he's holding a 155, well, wouldn't want to piss him off. Probably could have beat up Cassius Clay or Mike Tyson.
But money is on the 4.5" On the other hand, considering my meager luck at Lotto and other games of chance...
As previously noted, those are 155mm howitzer rounds.
Not 105mm, and not 4.5".
The trails in the background are those of an M114 155mm howitzer, fondly known in all services as "The Pig" because the beast was legendarily made of pig iron, and because it was a big, nasty, heavy piece to play with.
I was an arty section chief for 4 years, trained on the beast in question, and played with 155mm rounds the entire time I was in.
BTW, they weigh 90-95# each.
When toting them from the ammo drop off back to gun line (generally 50-200 yds), the normal load was one on each shoulder of the PASGT vest, and a third crossways across the first two, braced by your neck and head.
Anybody only carrying just two was officially a pussy.
